GenCon2012 Wrap-Up

Another glorious year for
Fourthcore Team Deathmatch

at GenCon!

The last banner you see before you die.
We had an excellent turn out this year, with several dozen brave crusaders coming out to see who had the skill, luck, and willpower to be crowned the Fourthcore Team Deathmatch champions!

The AM round started off a bit differently than expected, as Team KAAN had to drop out at the last minute due to an unexpected emergency, and which led to back-to-back three-way matches between Team Moose Hockey Maple Syrup, eh?, Team Astronaut Dinosaur, and Team Cellar Dwellers (the returning GenCon 2011 FTDM champions!)

The match started off on map E4M1 - Court of the Storm Lord

"BACK-TO-BACK TELEFRAGS!"
The three teams soon proved that everyone here was playing for keeps, as they battled back and forth, only to end with the Canadians edging out a victory over Team Cellar Dwellers by one kill (a pattern that would soon become familiar to Team Moose Hockey Maple Syrup Eh)!

The second half of the AM match belonged to Team Astronaut Dinosaur and their cunning use of the of Ballista in E1M2 - The Citadel!

"Bee that MotherF$#@er!" - the PCs got excited about catapulting hornets, and confused about the difference between hornets & bees.
With one victory and one loss each, teams Astronaut Dinosaur and Team Moose Maple Syrup Hockey, Eh advance onto the semi-finals! A surprise early knock-out of our returning champions the Cellar Dwellers.

In the PM entry match we had a rush of new players and surprise teams, including some that had never played Fourth Edition! Teams were formed, alliances were made, and the five teams broke up into a three-team-free-for-all match and a traditional two-team map.  On the three-team map, we had Team Awesomesauce, Team Death, and Team Company of the Jade Talon, and the two-team map started off with Team Husbandry facing off against the newly formed Team T-Rex.

Once the dust cleared, Team Awesomesauce took a commanding lead out of the first match, as team Death decided to bow out of the second half of the entry round. Meanwhile, Team T-Rex narrowly defeated Team Husbandry, and the remaining four teams went to the citadel to determine the true victors!

Husbandry and Jade Talon fought bravely and valiantly, but it wasn't enough to snatch victory away from T-Rex and Awesomesauce!

In the Semifinals we have:

A moment of calm and cooperation before the bloodshed started

MOOSE HOCKEY MAPLE SYRUP, EH; ASTRONAUT DINOSAUR; T-REX; & AWESOMESAUCE!!!

Things really started getting tense as the Dungeoneers battled for the pleasure of the Court of Stars in E6M1 - Internecion in the Feywild!

By 1 and 2 kills, respectively, the final match came to a showdown between the Canadians (and honorary Canadian) of Team Moose Hockey Maple Syrup, eh versus the warlords of Team Awesomesauce!

The tension in the air was palpable as the final map was revealed:  E5M3 - Pac-Man!

As the teams waged battle against each other, the Canadians took an early lead with clever tactics and lucky rolls, but before long Team Awesomesauce began clawing their way back, closing the gap and making every hit count!

"THERE'S NO SITTING IN FTDM!"
As the final seconds ticked off the clock, the PCS turned to the DM to see the final talley... (start at 4:19)

TEAM MOOSE HOCKEY MAPLE SYRUP, EH ARE VICTORIOUS BY ONE KILL!

A crazy, intense day ends with victorious Canadians

The victorious Team Moose Hockey Maple Syrup Eh?
We were fortunate enough to sit down with the victors immediately after the match, and catch a quick interview which you can hear here (The quality is very poor. I tried to clean it up as best I could).

And last, but not least, our illustrius DMs: Jon Green and Robert Waluchow

AN EXCITING END TO AN AMAZING DAY OF FOURTHCORE TEAM DEATHMATCH!

- Read the reactions from Derek Meyer's here
- The DMs would like to thank all participants for their amazing competitive spirit and sportsmanship, even in defeat
- Special thanks goes out to Wes & Katie Barta, last-minute substitutes on Team Astronaut Dinosaur in the Semifinals
- Jon Green refuses to apologize for stereotyping Canadians by giving them the team name "Moose Hockey Maple Syrup, Eh" and maintains that it's awesome.

  1. Moose Hockey Maple Syrup Eh is the best team name ever. Period.

Also I apologize again for how bad that video is. My phone is not the best of recording devices.

    1. Yeah I keep hearing these tales of video footage. Even if it's camera-phone quality, I'd love to see it!

    2. Oh jeez, now I see where the link is...

    3. It's hiding in there, heh.

Also it's really hard to not end up just filming Jon yelling at people. I have a tendency to try to film whoever is talking. This was usually Jon. ;P

    4. Heh, this was actually a very easy map to DM, almost everything was on the players. I didn't even have to roll respawn points. In terms of me yelling at the PCs, there was less on this one than there was on any other map.

  2. It's hilarious to see a map I threw together in some free moments at work sitting on the table in the final match!

Looks like everyone had a blast - I'll find a way to see it in person... one day. I'm sure.

    1. It's really a great map. It feels and plays very differently from other FTDM maps. It's simple, quick to run, and ridiculously deadly.

It made for one intense finale!

    2. I also enjoyed how it simultaneously rewarded and thwarted charging.

    3. It really was a ridiculously dangerous map. I loved it.
