How would they know what basic attacks I have? We don't know what they have. I think I have to disagree with the ruling here - it says "make a basic attack against a creature of your choice". To satisfy the RAW, the only thing the caster picks is the creature being targeted by the attack. The attack should be a valid attack, but it's entirely possible that a character has no basic attacks that could actually work. If RAW wanted the caster to make the choices, it would say "make a basic attack of your choice against a creature of your choice". We have this power on our team so I recognize that I'd lose this option for us, but it's a Level 1 Encounter with a mandatory effect - let's not make it more abusive than it already is. But if we're going to keep your ruling, can you please provide us with a list of all of our opponents basic attack options so that we can make educated choices when we cast the spell?
